Just like other pieces of clothing, getting the correct glove size is essential. Here’s how to measure glove size to ensure they fit your hands well:

First, measure around and across your palm with a fabric tape measure. Measure the widest part of your hand but don’t include the thumb. Then measure lengthwise from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the hand. Of the two figures, choose the larger number and round up. That is your glove size.

While we also included a general sizing chart, you should still check if there are brand-specific sizing charts from where you’re buying from.

Gloves, Sizing, and Shopping

With the right clothes and statement pieces on, elegant evening gloves can easily upgrade any look. But more than a fashion statement, gloves serve a variety of purposes.

The right pair of gloves will help keep your hands warm in the middle of a cold winter season. There are protective gloves for people needing a pair while working heavy equipment and machinery. There are also athletic gloves that help athletes grip sports equipment better and perform better i.e. golf gloves.

When you need your gloves to perform an important function, you must get them in the right size.

Gloves that are too loose on your hands will easily slip off even with the smallest movement. It’s also possible that they won’t be able to keep your hands warm and toasty in winter because they’re too loose.

On the other hand, gloves that are too tight will restrict movement. It can cut off proper circulation in your hands and cause pain to shoot up your hands and fingers.

When shopping for gloves in physical stores, it would be easier to get the perfect size because you can try them on and see and feel how they fit. But shopping for perfectly sized gloves proves to be trickier when shopping online.

Of course, you don’t want to go in blindly when shopping for gloves online, so how can you measure your hands for the perfect size?

How to Measure Glove Size

Now that we’ve established the importance of getting the right size when it comes to glove shopping, here’s how you can measure yours:

What you’ll need

  • Fabric tape measure or flexible measuring tape
  • Paper
  • Pencil

A step-by-step guide on measuring

Here’s how you can accurately measure the correct glove size for your hands:

  1. Measure your dominant hand

First, determine which of your two hands you should measure. Remember, measure your dominant hand. Your dominant hand is your right hand if you’re right-handed and your left hand if you’re left-handed.

But why, exactly?

Your dominant hand would usually be slightly larger than your non-dominant hand because you use it more often than the other. When measuring for gloves, it would be best to measure the bigger hand and make sure it fits well, given the slight size difference.

  1. Measure around the hand with the measuring tape

Next, take your fabric tape measure and wrap it across your palm, around the widest part of your hand, just below your knuckles. Make sure not to include your thumb. Make sure the tape measure fits just right – not too tight or too loose.

Then, take note of what your hand measures (either in inches or centimeters) and write it down on a piece of paper to remember.

  1. Measure lengthwise from the middle finger to the base of the hand

After measuring around, it’s time to measure your hand lengthwise. Spread your dominant hand and measure the length from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your hand, right where the wrist starts.

Then, take note of the finger length measurement.

  1. Choose the larger number

Now that you’ve got two measurements, choose the larger number of the two and round up the number.

For example, your two measurements are 5.4 and 6.5 inches. Pick 6.5 inches and round it up to 7 inches. Now that is your glove size and find your glove size in the sizing chart.

Now that you have a number and measurement of your hand, refer to these general glove sizing charts for men and women:

A Note on Sizing Charts

When looking through the sizing charts above, you have to keep in mind these are merely suggestions and estimations. Make sure to check in with the brand on what sizing chart they use. They may use the same general sizing chart or they may have a brand or manufacturer-specific sizing chart they follow.

Some brands may also use unisex sizes for unisex gloves.

Children’s glove sizes may also differ from those of adult sizes. Typically, these are age-based. But then again, children of the same age may have different hand sizes so always check on the sizing chart or ask for one if it isn’t already provided.

When You Receive Your Gloves

Upon receiving your gloves, immediately check if you got the size right. If you did, then we did our job right. If you didn’t, reach out to the seller and ask for what you received to be exchanged for a different size, if at all possible.

Conclusion

Getting the right glove size is essential no matter what kind of glove you’re getting and for whatever reason. When shopping online for gloves, this might be a more difficult task so here’s how to measure glove size.

To measure your correct glove size, take a fabric tape measure and measure your dominant hand, going across the palm. Measure the widest part of your hand, just below the knuckles. Don’t include your thumb. Then, measure lengthwise going from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your hand. Of the two figures, get the larger number and round up. That is your glove size.

Different brands and manufacturers may have varying glove sizing charts. Remember to refer to them and ask the seller as well for any questions.
